Pier History

The Reverend Herschell Harkins Memorial Pier was built in 1973, it is 1,140 ft. long and it was designed to help support the structure for sewage pipes which span the length of the pier and beyond.  The Pier is located on Sharp Park State Beach, home of fierce winds and sometimes punishing waves.  Some say immediately after the pier opened the word spread and anglers from all over California were attracted to the pier.  At the end of 1992, the pier had been opened for almost 20 years and it was heeded by engineers that the bulkhead supporting the first span had extensive corrosion and the pier should be closed. This was the first closure of many due to necessary repairs on the pier.  The pier was opened again within a week.

POPS was responsible for lobbying for the most recent repairs on the deck of the pier and we are currently seeking grants to complete the repairs.  We also worked with the City of Pacifica for new benches on the Pier to replace those damaged by winter storms.  POPS worked with Caltrans to get exit signs to the Pier on Highway 1.

The Pier has been featured in California Coast and Ocean Magazine and the Pacifica Tribune as well as being a site for Channels 4 and 7 for covering the weather news during the winter storms.  The Pier is a Pacifica landmark and the subject of many photos and paintings by area artists.
